GENERAL INFORMATION
The Confirmation Program at First Congregational Church is sponsored jointly by our Board of Deacons and Christian Education Committee. Open to young people in Grade 9, as well as older youth not yet confirmed, it is offered annually, and meets from September through May.
Confirmation is an ancient and very important rite of the Christian church which asks young people to make their first “adult” decision in the church: to personally commit themselves to Jesus Christ and the work of Christ’s church in the world. In being confirmed, young people are both embracing the faith into which their parents promised to nurture them at the time of their baptism and uniting in membership with The First Congregational Church of Southington.
In addition to attending all class sessions, class projects, and retreats, each student is required to attend worship each Sunday at one of our services. We encourage you to attend churches of other denominations and to share your experiences with the entire class. Finally, each student is expected to offer a minimum of 12 hours of service to the church, not including our class projects. For example, students may choose to work at Bread for Life, our community soup kitchen; work in our church during the Apple Harvest Festival; visit a church member in a nursing home or hospital; assist with technology during T.G.I. Sunday worship services; assist with child care in the church nursery or Church School (without missing worship more than one Sunday per month); serve at our Chicken Pie Supper; sing in our church choir, band or musicals; or participate in other agreed upon activities.
Please direct questions about confirmation to Reverend Linda Fernandes-Bailey at 860-628-6958.
