GENERAL INFORMATION
The Confirmation Program at First Congregational Church is sponsored jointly by our Board of Deacons and Christian Education Committee. It is taught primarily by our ministers, Rev. Richard Haverly, Jr., Rev. Cynthia Holden and Rev. Linda Fernandes-Bailey, as well as lay leader, Paul Vivian. Other lay people from our church have also volunteered to be Confirmation advisors and secret friends. Open to young people in Grade 9, as well as older youth not yet confirmed, it is offered annually, and meets from September through May.
Confirmation is an ancient and very important rite of the Christian church which asks young people to make their first “adult” decision in the church: to personally commit themselves to Jesus Christ and the work of Christ’s church in the world. In being confirmed, young people are both embracing the faith into which their parents promised to nurture them at the time of their baptism and uniting in membership with The First Congregational Church of Southington. This page offers all the meeting dates and times for this year’s Confirmation Program. Class time, unless otherwise specified, is from 7:30 – 9:00PM each Sunday evening in Fellowship Hall (under Meetinghouse). The set of initials under each class time designates the lead teacher for that session. In addition to attending all class sessions, class projects, and retreats, each student is required to attend worship each Sunday at one of our services. If you must be away on a particular Sunday, please make arrangements to attend a worship service at a church located where you are. Please bring back a worship bulletin from that church to receive credit for attending worship. We encourage you to attend churches of other denominations and to share your experiences with the entire class. Students will be allowed a maximum of 1 unexcused absence from class and 2 unexcused absences from worship during the year. This excludes the retreats, which are mandatory and need a doctor’s note to be considered “excused.” Please speak to Rick Haverly if you have questions regarding excused vs. unexcused absences. Finally, each student is expected to offer a minimum of 12 hours of service to the church, not including our class projects. For example, students may choose to work at Bread for Life, our community soup kitchen; work in our church during the Apple Harvest Festival; visit a church member in a nursing home or hospital; assist with technology during T.G.I. Sunday worship services; assist with child care in the church nursery or Church School (without missing worship more than one Sunday per month); serve at our Chicken Pie Supper; sing in our church choir, band or musicals; or participate in other agreed upon activities. Please address questions about this to Rick Haverly. Please note that more opportunities to complete volunteer hours seem to happen early in the year. Please begin right away to fulfill your requirement. SCHEDULE OF MEETINGS & EVENTS (2006-2007) SEP|OCT|NOV|DEC|JAN|FEB|MAR|APR|MAY|JUN
