Text Box: Welcome! Thank You for Worshiping With Us Today!
Welcome to The First Congregational Church of Southington. Ours is an Open & Affirming congregation dating from 1724 & worshiping in our present Meetinghouse since 1830. One of the larger, more vibrant United Church of Christ churches in New England, our church’s purpose is to love & worship God; extend God’s radically-inclusive love to all people everywhere; make more & better disciples of Jesus Christ; & inspire people & society to become more & more just, loving, compassionate & Christ-like. You will find our church to be an accepting, caring, non-judgmental community, where faith is renewed, lives are transformed, & power for positive living is received. It’s a church where the Spirit is alive & miracles happen! Welcome!

The Call to Worship

PASTOR:   We who walked in darkness have seen a great light.

PEOPLE:  Christ, the light of the world, shines in this place.

PASTOR:   The light of Christ shines in the church.

PEOPLE:  The cross of Christ brings a message of eloquent wisdom and saving power.

PASTOR:   The light of Christ shines in our world.

PEOPLE:  The call of Jesus turns us toward the light.

PASTOR:   The light of Christ surprised Jesus’ first disciples.

PEOPLE:  Will we, like Jesus’ early followers, hear a new calling today?

*Hymn of Praise: #495                  Called as Partners in Christ’s Service                                             Beecher

*Prayer of Invocation  (Unison)

O Christ, the light of the world, you have called us to this house of prayer today. You have invited us to be together in the presence of your word that we hear in scripture and song. We will speak prayerfully and listen attentively. We ask now for a hopeful and expectant spirit as we anticipate a word of guidance, or comfort, or challenge, or even a new calling in this time of worship. We know you surprised Peter and Andrew, James and John so that they left their fishing nests to follow you. We wonder what you have in store for us? Help us to know.   Amen.

Text Box: Top Ten Reasons Why You
Should Become a Stephen Minister

Reason #7 Stephen Ministers Learn to Listen

Most people think of listening as a simple, natural, and passive activity, but it is actually a powerful care-giving tool. Using Jesus as our model, Stephen Ministers learn the skill of active listening, which involves commitment, patience, and attention to body language. Stephen Ministers learn to listen for more than just words. They seek true understanding and empathy.

We are all called to care! New Stephen Ministry classes start January 17th.
Contact Cyndie Holden for more information.

Today’s  Scripture  Lesson

Matthew 4: 12-23

12Now when Jesus heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew to Galilee.13He left Nazareth and made his home in Capernaum by the sea, in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali, so that what had been spoken through the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled:15 “Land of Zebulun, land of Naphtali,on the road by the sea, across the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles—16the people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, and for those who sat in the region and shadow of death light has dawned.” 17From that time Jesus began to proclaim, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.” 18As he walked by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea—for they were fishermen.19And he said to them,“Follow me, and I will make you fish for people.”20Immediately they left their nets and followed him.21As he went from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John, in the boat with their father Zebedee, mending their nets, and he called them.22Immediately they left the boat and their father, and followed him.

The Lord is My Light

The Lord is my Light and my salvation; whom then, shall I fear?

The Lord is the strength of my life; of whom then shall I be afraid?

One thing have I asked of the Lord.

Therefore I will offer in the dwelling of my god an oblation with sounds of great gladness.

I will sing and make music to the Lord.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit;

As it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever.  Amen.
