Text Box: Welcome! Thank You for Worshiping With Us Today!
Welcome to The First Congregational Church of Southington. Ours is an Open & Affirming congregation dating from 1724 & worshiping in our present Meetinghouse since 1830. One of the larger, more vibrant United Church of Christ churches in New England, our church’s purpose is to love & worship God; extend God’s radically-inclusive love to all people everywhere; make more & better disciples of Jesus Christ; & inspire people & society to become more & more just, loving, compassionate & Christ-like. You will find our church to be an accepting, caring, non-judgmental community, where faith is renewed, lives are transformed, & power for positive living is received. It’s a church where the Spirit is alive & miracles happen! Welcome!

PRAISING   GOD

The Call to Worship

Leader:  In our weakness we are strong. In our poverty we are rich. In our foolishness we are wise. This is the upside down promise of the gospel we claim and celebrate.

People:  In our shadows we seek light. In our silences we listen. This is a day of celebration and foreboding.

Leader:  In our searching we are found. In our longing we are satisfied. In our powerlessness, we are powerful beyond all human understanding, for God’s power is made perfect in our weakness.

People:  God of mystery and mercy grant us new life and with you we accept the invitation to join you in these days of service and sacrifice.

*Hymn of Praise: #216                     All Glory, Laud, and Honor                                              St. Theodulph

*Prayer of General Confession (Unison)

We are taught from our youth that winning is better, that power is what we need. We confess that we often live by this value and exert our power in ways that are destructive to ourselves, to others and to our planet. We view power as a commodity to be claimed rather than a good to be shared.  Transparent before you in our arrogance and insecurity we confess that our posturing for power is rooted in our lack of trust in you. Forgive us when we doubt that this is true and help our unbelief as we live in this world where power is wielded against much that is holy. Forgive us; set us free; and empower us from within. In the name of the one who relinquished his power for our sake, Amen.

 Now in the silence hear our personal confessions…

*Personal Prayer of Confession (in silence)

*Assurance of Forgiveness

Text Box: Top Ten Reasons Why You
Should  Become  a  Stephen  Minister

Reason #7 Stephen Ministers Learn to Listen

Most people think of listening as a simple, natural, and passive activity, but it is actually a powerful care-giving tool. Using Jesus as our model, Stephen Ministers learn the skill of active listening, which involves commitment, patience, and attention to body language. Stephen Ministers learn to listen for more than just words. They seek true understanding and empathy.

We are all called to care! New Stephen Ministry classes start January 17th.
Contact Cyndie Holden for more information.

Today’s  Scripture  Lesson

MATTHEW 21:1-11

1When they had come near Jerusalem and had reached Bethphage, at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples,2saying to them,“Go into the village ahead of you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her; untie them and bring them to me.  3If anyone says anything to you, just say this, ‘The Lord needs them.’  And he will send them immediately.” his took place to fulfill what had been spoken through the prophet, saying, 5“Tell the daughter of Zion, Look, your king is coming to you, humble, and mounted on a donkey, and on a colt, the foal of a donkey.”  6The disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them; 7they brought the donkey and the colt, and put their cloaks on them, and he sat on them.  8A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road.  9The crowds that went ahead of him and that followed were shouting, “Hosanna to the Son of David!  Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord!  Hosanna in the highest heaven!”  10When he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was in turmoil, asking, “Who is this?” 11The crowds were saying, “This is the prophet Jesus from Nazareth in Galilee.”

                              *          ~                      *                      ~          *

      Anthem: Hosanna (Mustard Seeds)                       Natalie Sleeth

Hosanna! Hosanna! In chorus let us sing!

He cometh! He cometh to be our Lord and King,

Hosanna! Hosanna! O blessed now are we,

He cometh, He cometh, Our true Messiah, He.

All glory, laud and honor to David’s royal Son.

He comes, the great Redeemer, the long awaited One.

Hosanna! Hosanna! Let palms prepare His way!

He cometh, He cometh, let all rejoice this day!

                 Offeratory Anthem: Alone Thou Goest Forth, O Lord              Michael McCabe

Alone thou goest forth, O Lord, in sacrifice to die.

Is this thy sorrow naught to us who pass unheeding by?

Our sins, not thine, thou bearest Lord, Make us thy sorrow feel,

Till through our pity and our shame Love answers love’s appeal.

This is earth’s darkest hour, but thou dost light and life restore;

Then let all praise be given thee Who livest evermore.

Give us compassion Lord for thee, that as we share this hour,

Thy cross may bring to us thy joy and Resurrection power. Amen.

Take this True/False test about Jesus’ grand entrance into Jerusalem. Then scroll down for a look at the answers. How did you do?
Web Link:	www.time.com/time/

When Jesus rode into Jerusalem on what we celebrate as Palm Sunday, the people praised him as a King. They thought Jesus would make a wonderful government official! Choose 2 or 3 stories from the Time website that involve influential people. Read the articles & think about the qualities that make people leaders.

Discuss the following questions:: ∙
•	Name several leaders from history.
•	What made them famous?
•	Who are some people from today’s world that you consider worthy of praise?
•	What qualities do these persons possess that you might want to emulate?
•	Why is Jesus worthy of our Praise?

Ask a family member to pray. Praise Jesus for who He is and what He has done.
